Coverage options

Colorado Family Health Insurance Options

Every family is different. Here are the main types of coverage we can review together for your household.

ACA Marketplace Family Plans

Financial help may be available

Family plans offered through Connect for Health Colorado. Depending on your household income and size, your family may qualify for premium tax credits that lower the monthly cost.

  • Covers pre-existing conditions
  • Essential health benefits included
  • Only option eligible for marketplace savings

Children's Health Insurance Options

Coverage for kids of all ages

Children can generally stay on a parent's plan until age 26. Depending on income, kids may instead qualify for Health First Colorado or CHP+. Child-only plans can also be an option.

  • Pediatric dental and vision are essential benefits
  • Check your pediatrician is in-network
  • Eligibility for state programs is set by the state

Pregnancy & Growing Families

Maternity & newborn care

ACA-compliant plans include maternity and newborn care as essential health benefits. Having or adopting a baby generally opens a Special Enrollment Period to add your child or change plans.

  • Confirm your OB-GYN and hospital are in-network
  • Act quickly — enrollment windows are limited
  • Pregnant people may qualify for state programs

HSA-Eligible Family Plans

Tax-advantaged savings

High-deductible family plans that meet IRS requirements can let you save pre-tax money in a Health Savings Account. Premiums are often lower, but your family pays more out of pocket before coverage begins.

  • Family HSA limits are higher than self-only
  • HSA funds roll over year to year
  • Best for families comfortable with a higher deductible

HealthMarkets Insurance Agency offers the opportunity to enroll in either Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) through the Health Insurance Marketplace or off-Marketplace coverage. Please visit HealthCare.gov for information on the benefits of enrolling in a QHP. Off-Marketplace coverage is not eligible for the cost savings offered through the Marketplace.

How to choose

The Right Family Plan Is About More Than the Monthly Premium

A low premium can mean higher costs when your kids need care. These are the five things we review together for your whole family.

Provider Networks

We confirm your pediatrician, OB-GYN, specialists, and preferred hospitals are in-network for every family member.

Prescriptions

We check how each family member's medications are covered, including drug tiers and any prior authorization rules.

Family Deductibles

Family plans can have individual and family deductibles. We explain how yours works and when coverage begins for each person.

Out-of-Pocket Maximums

The yearly cap on what you pay for covered in-network care — for each person and for the whole family. It's your worst-case number.

Financial Assistance

Premium tax credits and, for some incomes, extra savings on Silver plans are available only through Connect for Health Colorado. Eligibility is determined by the marketplace.

Good to know

One Family, More Than One Coverage Program

Family members don't always qualify for the same coverage. Parents might enroll in a Marketplace plan while children qualify for CHP+ or Health First Colorado. Understanding how these programs fit together can help your family get the right coverage for each person.

  • Marketplace Coverage

Private health plans through Connect for Health Colorado, with premium tax credits for those who qualify.

  • Health First Colorado

Colorado's Medicaid program, for eligible children, adults, and pregnant people based on income and other factors.

  • CHP+ (Child Health Plan Plus)

Low-cost coverage for eligible children and pregnant people whose income is too high for Health First Colorado.

Eligibility for each program is determined by the marketplace or the State of Colorado, based on income, household size, and other factors. I can help you understand your options and point you to the right application.
